MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System) has been in the news lately. Did you know that Lazer makes two helmets for children that incorporates MIPS technology?
Lazer and MIPS have collaborated to make one of the safest children's helmets ever available. MIPS is now available in the Lazer P'Nut and Nut'Z children's helmets making these helmets perform even better in the event of a crash.
The MIPS patent was developed by some of the world's leading researchers in biomechanics and nuroscience at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the Karolinksa Institute in Sweden. In the same way that cars have airbags and are now tested for side impact, MIPS is setting a new standard for helmet safety. The secret behind MIPS' unique patent comes from the study of the human brain.
The brain is surrounded by a low-friction cushion of cerebrospinal fluid. MIPS imitates the brain's way of protecting itself by giving the helmet its own low-friction layer between the outer shell and the liner. In the event of a crash this layer absorbs much of the energy created by a blow to the head. The combination of the brain's own protection and MIPS therefore ensures maximum protection for the rider. Very simple, yet very effective.
While the MIPS system can be found in other helmets, the P'Nut and the Nut'Z mark the first time this technology has been available for children. The P'Nut helmet fits infants up to a 54cm circumference head and weighs 270 grams. The Nut'Z helmet fits children up to a 56cm circumference head and weighs 300 grams.
A review of the Lazer Helium helmet on Outdoor Nation:
If you’re looking for a good fit, then this helmet is for you. Many helmets aren’t made to fit everyone’s head well, making wearing a helmet a dissatisfying experience. The Lazer Helium helmet comes in four sizes, meaning that this helmet should fit everyone, even if your head on the larger side. The helmet also features the Rollsys retention system, which allows for a perfect fit around your entire head. The system is controlled by one dial, which means it is easy to change. On the inside of the helmet you can also see how tight you’ve sized your helmet.
